Lifestyle blocks and the rural fringe
Ceres, Moriac, Modewarre, Freshwater Creek, Connewarre, Bellbrae. Houses set back from the road on Fixed Wireless that drops out every time the wind picks up, or addresses the nbn map simply forgot. Starlink is often the first connection these properties have ever had that just works.
Great Ocean Road bush blocks
Fairhaven, Moggs Creek, Aireys Inlet and the ridgelines behind them. Steep terrain and heavy tree cover make Fixed Wireless line-of-sight nearly impossible, and mobile coverage is patchy. Starlink works here, but the dish needs a genuinely clear patch of sky, which on a bush block takes planning.
Sky Muster refugees
If you are on nbn Sky Muster satellite, you already know the pain: video calls that stutter, pages that hesitate before loading. That is physics, not your provider. Sky Muster satellites orbit about 36,000 km up; Starlink satellites sit around 550 km up. The latency difference is roughly 665 ms versus 30 ms in ACCC testing.
Working from home, rurally
Escaped to Winchelsea, Inverleigh, Teesdale or Lethbridge but still need rock-solid Teams and Zoom calls? Starlink's low latency makes video calls feel like a city fibre connection. The catch is that the standard router rarely covers a rural home office by itself, so the WiFi side needs to be designed, not just plugged in.
When nbn is the smarter buy.
We are not a Starlink reseller and we do not earn anything if you buy one. Sometimes the honest answer is to stay on (or fix) what you have:
Fibre is available (or free to upgrade to)
If your address has fibre to the premises, or is eligible for nbn's free FTTN-to-fibre upgrade, take it. Fibre is cheaper per month than Starlink, does not care about weather or trees, and has no hardware to mount on your roof. Starlink cannot beat a working fibre connection.
Fixed Wireless with clean line-of-sight
nbn upgraded its Fixed Wireless network in 2024. Where your antenna has clear line-of-sight to an upgraded tower, plans up to 100 Mbps are standard and higher tiers (200 to 400 Mbps wholesale) are available at many addresses. No hardware cost, no dish on the roof. If your Fixed Wireless is genuinely healthy, keep it.
In-town addresses
In Geelong, Torquay, Ocean Grove and other towns with solid fixed-line nbn, Starlink is almost never the right answer. Slow internet in town is usually the WiFi inside the house, not the connection. We measure both before recommending you spend anything.

Hardware, and Residential vs Roam
The standard dish and router kit rents for about $15 a month (returned if you cancel), or can be bought outright. Residential plans are tied to your home address. Roam plans ($85 a month for 100 GB, $210 unlimited) are portable, which suits caravans and holiday setups, but cost more for the same usage at home. For a fixed rural property, Residential is almost always the right plan.

The on-site assessment is $149 flat: dish placement and obstruction analysis, a Starlink vs nbn recommendation for your specific address, WiFi coverage design, and a written report. If you go ahead with an installation, it is quoted per job after the assessment, because a single-storey home with the router in the right spot is a very different job to a treed block with a shed 60 metres from the house. No install is quoted sight unseen.

Starlink's kit is genuinely self-install friendly, and if the dish on the lawn works for you, we will say so. A professional install is about the four things the box does not solve:
Site and sky assessment
Starlink needs a wide, unobstructed view of the sky, not just a gap between two trees. We map the obstruction picture at your property, work out where the dish will actually hold a stable connection year-round (trees grow), and check it against how Starlink's own obstruction tool reads your site.
Mount and cable route done properly
A dish sitting on the lawn is a trip hazard and a mower casualty. A proper install means a roof or pole mount rated for coastal wind, a weatherproof cable penetration that will not leak into your ceiling, and a cable route that gets the power supply and router where they should live, not draped through a window.
Router setup and bypass mode
The Starlink router is basic. For most homes we configure bypass mode and put proper networking gear behind it, so you get real WiFi coverage, guest networks, parental controls and the option of a failover connection. Your existing network can usually be integrated rather than replaced.
Whole-home WiFi design
This is the step most Starlink installs skip, and it is the one that matters most. A 200 Mbps dish is wasted if the WiFi only reaches the room the router is in. We design the indoor coverage the same way we do every WiFi job: heat maps, measured signal at the spots you actually use, and coverage out to the shed, studio or granny flat if you need it.

Is Starlink better than nbn Sky Muster? +
For almost everyone, yes. In the ACCC's satellite broadband measurements, Starlink averaged 192 Mbps download with 29.8 ms latency, while Sky Muster topped out around 111 Mbps with latency near 665 ms. That latency gap is why video calls feel normal on Starlink and painful on Sky Muster. It comes at a price though: Sky Muster hardware is installed at no cost, while Starlink you pay for.
What does Starlink cost in Australia? +
As at July 2026, Starlink Residential plans are $75 a month (100 Mbps tier), $110 a month (200 Mbps tier) or $150 a month (Residential Max), all with unlimited data and no lock-in. Can I install Starlink myself? +
Yes, and the kit is designed for it. Plenty of people stand the dish on the lawn and it works. Where DIY installs come unstuck is everything after that: dish placement that stays obstruction-free as trees grow, a safe roof mount and weatherproof cable entry, and WiFi that covers more than one room. If you are comfortable on a roof and happy with the standard router, DIY is a fair option. If not, get the mount, cabling and network done once, properly.
Does Starlink work on the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road? +
Yes. Starlink covers the whole Geelong region, including Fairhaven, Moggs Creek, Aireys Inlet, Lorne and the Otways. The catch on coastal bush blocks is tree cover: the dish needs a wide, clear view of the sky, and on a steep treed block the best spot is often not the obvious one. Do I still need proper WiFi if I get Starlink? +
Usually, yes. Starlink fixes the connection into your house; it does nothing for coverage inside it. The included router suits a small flat, not a long single-storey rural home with a shed and a granny flat.
