That sentence starts a lot of our phone calls. It is usually followed by "and I've already tried restarting it". A dead spot is not random and it is not bad luck. Something specific is stopping the signal getting there, and it is nearly always one of six things.
The back bedroom
Furthest point from the modem at the front of the house. The most common dead spot in the region, by a distance.
The upstairs office
Signal has to climb through a floor, ducting and insulation to get there, and it arrives exhausted.
The deck or alfresco
An external wall, often with foil-backed sarking behind the render, sits between the router and the barbecue.
The shed, studio or granny flat
A separate building is a separate coverage problem. It needs its own solution, not a bigger antenna on the house.
The garage
Roller doors, brick, and usually the far corner of the block. Awkward, and increasingly needed for smart doors and cameras.
The main bathroom
Tiles, a big mirror and pipework in the walls. Genuinely one of the hardest rooms in any house.
Why that one room drops out.
Six causes, and most homes have two or three of them at the same time. Knowing which combination you have is the difference between a free fix and an expensive one.
Distance and geometry
Signal weakens with every metre and every wall it crosses. A modem installed where the technician found the wall socket, usually the front of the house, is often the worst possible place for it. This is physics, not a fault, and moving the gear is free.
What your walls are made of
Double brick, foil-backed insulation, concrete, tiled wet areas and rendered walls all absorb or reflect WiFi. The faster band suffers most, which is why a room can show full bars on a phone and still deliver almost nothing usable.
Your neighbours are on your channel
In apartments, townhouses and small-lot estates, a dozen or more networks can be competing on the same channel as yours. Your equipment is not broken. It is queuing. Picking a clear channel for your address costs nothing and often fixes the dead spot on its own.
The modem is in a cupboard
Inside a cabinet, on the floor, behind a television, next to a fridge, or in the laundry. All of these are common and all of them cost you coverage. The first thing we test is what happens when the gear comes out of hiding.
Wrong settings, right hardware
Channel width set too wide for a crowded street, a band steering feature fighting your phone, an old device dragging the network down to its speed. Settings problems look exactly like coverage problems from the couch, and they are much cheaper to fix.
The house is genuinely too big for one router
Sometimes it really is a coverage problem, and the answer is one well-placed access point (a second WiFi transmitter wired back to your modem) or a properly designed mesh. We arrive at that conclusion from measurements, and only after the free fixes have been tried.
The fixes, cheapest first.
We work down this list in order. Most homes are sorted before we get to step five, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a box.
- 1 Move the router out of the cupboard, off the floor, and away from the fridge or mirror. Costs nothing, and it removes a surprising number of dead spots on its own.
- 2 Change to a clear channel for your street, and set the channel width to suit a crowded area rather than an empty laboratory.
- 3 Fix the link between the modem and the rest of the house. A tired cable or a bad port quietly caps everything downstream of it.
- 4 Separate the bands or adjust the settings so devices stop clinging to a weak connection when a better one is available.
- 5 Add one wired access point in the right room. One in the right place beats three in the wrong places, every time.
- 6 Design a proper mesh or a cabled system, if and only if the measurements say the house needs it.

How do I fix a WiFi dead spot in my house? +
Work from cheapest to most expensive. Move the router out of the cupboard and off the floor, change to a channel your neighbours are not using, and check the settings before buying anything. If the room is still dead after that, it is a genuine coverage problem and it needs one access point in the right place. Our $199 assessment, flat and GST included, measures which of those it is, so you fix the actual cause instead of guessing.
What causes WiFi dead spots? +
Usually distance and wall materials, a crowded channel shared with neighbours, or a router hidden inside furniture. Most homes we visit have two or three of those at once. The faster WiFi band is the one that suffers most, which is why a room can show bars on your phone and still be unusable.
Can you fix dead spots without me buying anything? +
Often, yes. A large share of the homes we assess do not need new hardware, they need the gear they already own moved and configured correctly. We try the free fixes first and we tell you honestly when they are enough. No upselling.
Will a WiFi extender fix my dead spot? +
Sometimes, and often not. A cheap extender repeats whatever signal reaches it, so if you put it in the dead spot it repeats a weak signal and can halve your speed in the process. Placement decides whether an extender helps or hurts, and placement is exactly what the drawn plan tells us.
How long does it take to fix WiFi dead spots? +
About 90 minutes on site for a typical home. That covers walking every room, measuring, finding the cause, and applying the fixes we can do on the day.
