NBN playing up in Geelong?

Before you wait an hour on hold to your provider, work out what's actually broken. We diagnose, then fix what we can on the day — and tell you exactly what to escalate to NBN if it's their problem.

The diagnosis flowchart

Is it the NBN, your modem, your WiFi, or your provider?

Four totally different problems, four totally different fixes. The first thing the assessment does is tell you which of the four it actually is.

Cause 1

Is it the NBN itself?

Check the NBN status page for your address. If your area's flagged as down, that's a network outage — your provider can't fix it, and neither can we. Wait it out.

Tell-tale sign

All your neighbours are also down. The lights on your NBN box are unusual.

Cause 2

Is it your modem?

Plug a laptop directly into the NBN box's WAN port (or your modem's LAN port) with an ethernet cable. If the laptop has internet but your WiFi devices don't, your modem's WiFi is the problem.

Tell-tale sign

WiFi devices can't connect, but a wired laptop can. The modem is hot to touch.

Cause 3

Is it your WiFi?

If everything works in one room and not in another, the connection is fine — your WiFi can't reach. The router is too far, the signal is blocked, or your channel is congested.

Tell-tale sign

Some devices work, others don't. Speed in some rooms is fine, in others it's terrible.

Cause 4

Is it your retail provider?

The NBN is the network. Your provider (Telstra, Optus, Aussie, TPG, iiNet, Belong, etc.) buys bandwidth from NBN and sells it to you. If they buy too little, your speeds tank at peak times — even though the NBN itself is fine.

Tell-tale sign

Speeds are great at 11am, terrible 7-10pm. Cheap provider, common pattern.

Suburb-specific patterns

NBN problems by Geelong suburb.

Different parts of the Geelong region have different NBN technology, and different technology has different failure modes. Here's what we see most often where:

Belmont, Newtown, Geelong West

Most homes here are on the older copper-based NBN, known as FTTN: fibre runs to a box in the street and copper covers the last stretch to your house. Long copper runs from the exchange mean upload speeds genuinely struggle — often 5-10 Mbps where 40 Mbps was promised. The fix is sometimes 'switch to the cable network' (iiNet has private cable here, separate from NBN).

Armstrong Creek, Charlemont, Mount Duneed

Most new-estate homes here are on private fibre run by OptiComm, a separate company from nbn, NOT the NBN itself. They look the same to the customer but they're a separate network with a separate provider list. If you bought a 'NBN-compatible router' it might not work — wrong network.

Mount Duneed (rural), Bellbrae, Connewarre, Wallington, Lethbridge

Rural NBN here is delivered by radio (Fixed Wireless) — a roof antenna pointed at a tower. Drops in summer storms, big-wind events, and when the tree between the antenna and the tower grows another metre. The fix is usually antenna placement.

Apollo Bay, Forrest, deep Otways

The Otway forest canopy is the worst possible terrain for Fixed Wireless. Many properties here are on satellite NBN (Sky Muster) which has high latency — fine for browsing, painful for video calls. Starlink is genuinely worth considering as an alternative here.

Geelong CBD apartments + waterfront towers

Buildings here use FTTB (fibre to the basement) — fast in theory but the cabling between basement and your apartment varies wildly in quality. Most slowdowns in CBD apartments are the in-building wiring, not the NBN.

Save the call to your provider.

Most calls to NBN providers don't fix anything — because the customer doesn't know what to ask for. We diagnose first so the call (if there even is one) is short and useful.

NBN Geelong — common questions

What people in Geelong actually ask.

Is the NBN down in Geelong right now? +

Check NBN's official status page (nbnco.com.au/support/network-status) — they post real-time outage info by address. If yours is listed, it's a known network issue and waiting it out is the only option. If it isn't listed but you're still down, the problem is at your end (modem, WiFi, or provider) not the NBN itself.

How do I know if it's the NBN or my WiFi? +

The 30-second test: plug a laptop directly into the NBN box (or your modem) with an ethernet cable. If THAT laptop has internet, the NBN is fine — your WiFi is the problem. If THAT laptop has no internet either, the NBN itself is the problem.

My NBN speed is way below my plan in Geelong — what's wrong? +

Three common causes in Geelong specifically: (1) your address is on the older copper-based NBN with a long copper run from the exchange, capping speeds well below the plan; (2) your provider is selling more bandwidth than they're buying from NBN, slowing you down at peak times; (3) your modem is old. We can measure all three.

Should I upgrade my NBN to fibre? +

If you're on the copper-based NBN (FTTN or FTTC, where fibre stops at a street box or a kerbside pit and copper does the rest), there's a good chance your address is now eligible for a free upgrade to full fibre, called FTTP. NBN has been progressively offering this since 2022. We can check your eligibility on the day and walk you through the request — your provider usually won't volunteer it.

What's the best NBN provider for Geelong? +

Depends on what you value. The ACCC's Measuring Broadband Australia program found the major providers all delivered close to their plan speeds in the busy evening hours, with only a few percentage points between them, so the provider is rarely the whole story. Support quality, contract terms and how they handle faults matter more. We test your line at the wall first, and if it is genuinely the provider we say so and help you compare.

Can you fix NBN problems for me? +

We can diagnose them all and fix many of them on the day — modem swap, WiFi setup, channel optimisation, firmware updates. Things like NBN line faults need NBN to send a tech, but we'll work out exactly what to tell them so the visit isn't wasted.
