Wye River is about 67 permanent residents, a pub, a general store, and a steep hillside of holiday houses between the Otways and one of the prettiest beaches on the coast. It is also, quietly, one of the best-connected villages on our whole service area.
The best line on the coast, honestly.
Every Wye River address we checked on the nbn rollout data, from the Great Ocean Road strip to Karingal Drive to Separation Creek across the point, comes back full-fibre FTTP. That is the top tier of fixed-line nbn, the same technology the newest Geelong estates get, in a village of a few hundred houses an hour and a half down the coast. Gigabit plans are genuinely on the table here.
Which changes what our job looks like. In most coastal towns we spend half the visit working out what the line can actually deliver. At Wye River the line is nearly always fine, so when the internet feels bad, the problem lives inside the house. And these houses are a WiFi challenge all of their own.

Wye River rebuilt much of itself after the Christmas Day 2015 bushfire, which destroyed 116 homes here and in Separation Creek. The homes that have gone up since are impressive: multi-level, architect-designed, stepped down the slope with the view doing the talking. They are also exactly the floor plans a single router cannot cover. The fibre box lands at road level, the router gets plugged in next to it, and the living areas two storeys down the hill get whatever signal survives the trip through steel framing and concrete.
The fix is planning coverage like the architects planned the house: measure every level, run cable where it earns its keep, and place access points where people actually sit. That is precisely what the assessment maps out.
Holiday houses that have to work without you.
Most Wye River homes are holiday houses and short-stay rentals, empty for months and then full for a week. We set these up for remote management: you can see from your phone that the connection is up, reboot the router without driving down, and run a separate guest network that keeps renters away from your own devices. Mobile coverage thins out fast in the valley, so the WiFi genuinely is the connection here, for you and your guests both.
