Skenes Creek is the village most people drive straight through on the way to Apollo Bay, six kilometres further along. About 249 people live here year-round, at a median age of 55, and fewer than a third of the 362 dwellings were occupied on census night. It is holiday houses, B&Bs and retirees, strung along the beach where Skenes Creek Road begins its climb into the Otways.

Every Skenes Creek address we checked on the nbn rollout data comes back the same: Fixed Wireless, with no fixed-line nbn in the village at all. Fixed Wireless is a radio link to a tower, and done well it is genuinely serviceable. But it lives and dies on line-of-sight, and the foothills that give Skenes Creek its outlook also cast signal shadows. Two houses a street apart can have completely different internet, on identical plans, and no router upgrade changes that.
That is why we measure before we recommend. The assessment separates what the tower is delivering to your antenna from what your WiFi is doing with it inside the house, because those are different problems with different fixes and very different price tags.
The hill blocks are their own story.
Up Skenes Creek Road, past Chris’s at Beacon Point and on toward Tanybryn, the blocks get steep and seriously treed. That complicates every wireless option at once: the Fixed Wireless path, satellite dishes hunting for open sky, and mobile signal that is already weak outside Apollo Bay. Sky Muster is the usual fallback up here, and Starlink is worth weighing up, but the honest answer is property-by-property. We look at what your block can actually see before anyone spends money.

A big share of Skenes Creek is short-stay accommodation, and the WiFi is part of what guests are paying for.
