The short version

Your internet is not the problem

The line into the house tested at about 520 Mbps by cable, which is everything your plan is meant to deliver, and six of the eight rooms we measured are already fast. One WiFi unit on the kitchen bench at the front simply cannot reach the back bedroom you work in. That is one problem with one fix, and there is nothing else in this report you need to buy.

What we found

Three things, and only one of them costs money

The internet arriving is fine

Plugged straight into the modem by cable we measured about 520 Mbps down and 49 Mbps up, which is the whole of a 500 plan. Nothing needs changing with your provider.

One WiFi unit, at the wrong end

The modem sits on the kitchen bench at the front of the house, boxed in behind the kettle and the microwave, and it is the only WiFi in the building.

The back of the house asks too much of it

Between that bench and the desk in Bed 4 there are four internal walls, two built-in robes and about eighteen metres. Signal loses something at every one of them.

Why Bed 4 measures 31 Mbps when the kitchen measures 505. Your laptop can only use the fast half of the WiFi when it can still hear it clearly, and by the time the signal has crossed the house it cannot. It drops back to the slower half, which travels further but carries much less, and that is the whole story of the 31 Mbps. It is not the internet, it is not the laptop, and it is not something a setting fixes. The signal has to start closer to the room, which is what a wired WiFi point at the back of the house does.

Room names follow the plan above. Upload speed sat between 44 and 49 Mbps everywhere except the alfresco and Bed 4, which managed 9 and 6. Worth saying plainly: at 31 Mbps Bed 4 will still carry a single stream. What it will not carry is a video call, a large upload and the television at the same time, which is exactly what a room used as an office is asked to do.

An extender listens to a weak signal and repeats it, so it can only ever hand on about half of what it hears, and it does it under a second network name your phone clings to once it has joined. Nothing is wrong with the unit. It is the wrong tool for a house this shape.

The reasoning

Why one wired point, and not a set of three

The honest answer to a house like this is usually less equipment than people expect. Six of the eight rooms already measure well, so the only place that needs a signal of its own is the back.

  • The internet is already doing everything it is paid to do About 520 Mbps by cable at the modem on a 500 plan. There is no provider call to make and no plan to change.
  • A wired point beats a repeated one, every time The new point is fed by cable, so it starts with the full speed rather than half of whatever reached it through the walls.
  • One point in the rear hallway covers four rooms and the alfresco Bed 2, Bed 3, Bed 4 and the alfresco all sit within a few metres of that wall, which is why a second and third point would be buying the same coverage twice.
  • Moving the modem off the bench is free A metre up the wall and out from behind the appliances is worth doing whether or not you go any further, and we can do it in ten minutes.
  • Your desk stops depending on WiFi at all The socket on the face of the new point puts the computer on a cable, which is the one connection that never has a bad afternoon.
  • One network name, so nobody has to choose The new point carries the same name and password as the modem, so phones and laptops move across on their own as you walk down the hallway.
On the day

What the work would be, in order

  1. We test the line by cable first, before anything is touched So the day starts from a number rather than an assumption, and so you can see what changed.
  2. The modem comes off the bench and onto the wall A metre up, clear of the splashback and the appliances, on the cable that is already there.
  3. One cable runs from the modem to the rear hallway Through the roof space and down the wall cavity, ending in a standard wall plate outside Bed 4. No trunking on the wall.
  4. The WiFi point goes into that plate It sits flat in the wall like a power point, takes its power down the same cable, and leaves a wired socket on its face for the desk.
  5. Both units run one network name and one password Yours, unchanged, so not a single device in the house needs reconnecting.
  6. We measure every room again before we leave Same phone, same spots, same time of day, and the new numbers go in a short completion report you keep.
Things we noticed

Two things outside our trade

Worth having someone else look at, in your own time. Neither of these is ours to fix and neither is urgent. We are listing them because you should hear them from us rather than find them later.
  • The outdoor power point by the alfresco table. The cover is cracked and does not close, and it sits where the weather reaches it. That is an electrician, and it is worth doing before anything else goes up out there.
  • The garage wall under the nbn box. There is a damp mark at skirting level directly below it. Worth a builder or a plumber having a look, because it is under the one piece of equipment in the house that nobody can replace for you.

A real report carries the customer’s name and address, and every number in it was measured at that property on the day.
